The term ‘evergreen content’ is used a lot in the SEO and content marketing industry. You may be thinking, ‘What makes evergreen content different from regular content… doesn’t all content remain relevant for a long period of time?’ But that’s where you’re wrong. Read our article to learn everything you need to know about evergreen content!
Evergreen Content Meaning
Evergreen content is not a trend. In fact, it’s a piece of content that has been published and will remain relevant to readers over an extended period of time. Did you know that this type of content was named after evergreen trees?
The reason for this is that these types of trees stay green and retain their leaves all year round, which symbolises vitality. Just like these trees, evergreen content remains relevant, fresh and valuable to readers for a long time.
But all content is evergreen because it’s always live, right? Wrong. Some content could be published but lose value over time, whereas others gain value and traffic even after months of being published.

Examples of Evergreen Content
You may be wondering what evergreen content is. Evergreen content is everywhere. It’s on blogs, websites and social media platforms, including YouTube. This type of content has no expiration date and remains relevant as trends and seasons change. Different types of evergreen content include:
- FAQs
- Tutorials
- Case studies
- Glossaries
- Reviews
Although these are all examples of evergreen content, that’s not to say that every single piece of content that falls under these categories is evergreen. For example, if a tutorial talks about how you can fix your iPhone 12, then this is not evergreen content.
This is because technology is constantly changing, and very soon there will be a new iPhone that people will be searching for. Remember, evergreen content provides readers with valuable information that is still relevant years later.
A good example of evergreen content could be a tutorial on how to bake cakes. Personally, I can’t imagine a future where people don’t like cakes; can you?

What isn’t Classed as Evergreen Content?
Content that has the potential to expire is not classed as evergreen content. So, anything written about this year’s fashion trends or prime minister is not classed as evergreen content. Some other types of content that can expire are:
- Seasonal content
- News articles
- Content about fashion
- Time-sensitive content
- Statistics
An example of content that wouldn’t be classed as evergreen would be a news article talking about the results of last night’s football game. Although some people may search about it now and again, it will eventually expire.

What Are the Benefits of Evergreen Content?
There are so many benefits to writing and publishing evergreen content. From SEO benefits to long-term traffic, there are lots of ways this type of content can benefit you or your business.
Evergreen content is a great way to establish brand authority by offering valuable information, which you can continue sharing on social media throughout the year. The benefits of evergreen content are:
- It’s cost-effective
- It can improve ROI
- It can boost social media traffic
- It can positively impact lead generation
- It can improve organic search performance

How Can You Create Evergreen Content?
The first and most important factor to remember when writing is to make your content as engaging and understandable as possible. Even if you are an expert in a certain field, it’s important to remember that people search for things to learn more about it.
So, if you are writing a guide about ‘How to cook a perfect poached egg’, make sure you simplify it as much as possible so your audience understands. Maybe even include a step-by-step guide with images to engage your audience.
Here are some tips for you to follow when writing evergreen content:
- Make sure your content will remain relevant: When thinking of what to write, make sure that your content doesn’t mention any tools or topics that may become outdated a few months from now.
- Avoid technical language: Readers want to click on a piece of content and understand what you’re talking about. Using overly technical, complex language may cause them to click off your page.
- Don’t beat around the bush: Users will want a straightforward answer from your content, so if you use too many headers about irrelevant topics, then this may scare the reader off.
- Structure your content properly: No one likes chunky pieces of text with no images or infographics. Too much text can come across as overwhelming, again causing the reader to click off your content.
- Keep it short but informative where possible: If a piece of content is too broad, then your piece will be much longer. The average human attention span is just 8.25 seconds, which is why it is important to grip your audience with engaging content as soon as possible.
Utilise Google Trends

If you want to create evergreen content but aren’t too sure what your piece should be about or whether or not it can fall under the evergreen category, give Google Trends a try. I searched the term ‘SEO’ in Google Trends and as you can see it has been a popular search term for just under a year.
So, straight away, you can identify that information that talks about SEO is evergreen content as it doesn’t have an expiry date and can provide valuable information to the reader for long periods of time.
Remember, to keep your content evergreen don’t mention anything that has the potential to become outdated, such as tools (SemRush) or trends.

Here is an example of something that wouldn’t be classed as evergreen content. The term I searched for was ‘Christmas’, which only performed well for one month out of the year.
So, if you were to write a piece of content about anything seasonal, it would drive traffic to your website but only for a short period.
This is the type of content that won’t provide the reader with much value as time goes on.
